I guess this is one time when my bourbon preference comes in handy. As per US Law bourbon must be made in NEW Oak casks.
It is pretty funny that the picture they use with the article is of a bottle of Gentleman Jack which while not technically a bourbon still adhears to the bourbon standard but is charcoal filtered.
When I was watching the Ranger game Saturday night the announcers were mumbling about some “Prucha Song” they played when Prucha scored a goal. So last night in between periods they showed a clip of their ice level reporter dancing to the song which they said was by a ‘70 disco band about Ghengis Khan.
Yup you guessed it: Yidden! Looking to download the torrent from last nights game to get confirmation.
Figured I would take advantage of my blog to keep a rolling record of my trip. This way when my wife asks me what I did I will have some way of remembering.
The flight was decent. Had a middle seat but that didn’t cause to many problems as neither of my row-mates were 700lbs old ladies. Slept through dinner and most of the flight which is better than last time. We barely had a minyan on the plane which was surprising. In the end I think there were 14-17 men who participated. The plane was packed with birthright people so that may have skewed the normal dati/non-dati ratios.
When we last left you, your fearless hero was taking a breather after downing three shots is quick succession. Having tasted the new stuff it was time to visit old friends. First on the list was Heaven Hill. Notable for their 18yr Single Barrel Elijah Wood which I picked up after last Whiskey Fest and saved for a special occasion (the birth of my daughter). They were show casing two new offerings. First a Evan Williams Single Barrel. Quite tasty not as stand outish as I may have imagined but it was smooth with plenty of flavor and an after taste that stayed with you for a couple of minutes. Then came the novelty whiskey. Bernheim Original Wheat. If you took a beer got rid of the bitter and added the wood and color of a bourbon then that is what you get. It was a unique taste (I just picked up a bottle at my local store and I can’t wait to crack it). I don’t know if it was the novelty or just newness of flavor but I knew that this was something I could enjoy.
So once we were out of the Glenrothes session my uncle had to go meet a friend of his. This was accomplished fairly quickly and the three of us tried the Laphroig table again. Unfortunately they were out of the Cask strength that they were pouring. So we had to settle for the 10 year old single barrel. Not being much of a Scotch connoisseur I didn’t know what to think. I know that it is supposed to be “peaty” but I’ve never been able to quantify that flavor in my head. So I guess it was. The other two made appreciative noises and I nodded my head. We next stopped at the Dalmore and tasted the Cigar Malt. Don’t know how they did it but it tasted like a cigar smells. I can only imagine sitting in a dark bar smoking a cigar and drinking a cigar tasting whiskey. Must be overwhelming.
So to start off my return to blogging I present my recap from Whiskey Fest. I figure it will be 2-3 parts long.
The evening got off to a less than glamorous start. Experience showed that there was little reason to arrive early. Most of the drunks show up early and leave an hour later. So I met my uncle for a quick 6:30 dinner and headed for the fest. Walking three block across town in a driving rain was a small sacrifice for what awaited us so we stoically pressed on. When we got to the hotel and check our coats it was a small surprise to see the not so small fee. However $6 is a small price to pay considering we got the tickets for free.
I’m Back. Lets see if this blogging things works better the second time around.
Great trip, made even greater that I walked away with $50 from the black jack tables :)
This was my first “photo trip” where my goal was to take as many quality pictures as possible. I took 200 pictures with my SLR and 250 with my new Canon S400, so far the results are promising. The only thing I regret is leaving my wide angle lens in the car at the Hoover Dam. I could have used it!
Ah one week until vacation! I’ve lined up 8 roles of film for the trip. My goal is to shoot them all! Malka recently came into a glut of slide film and she has graciously lent me some. Now I have to get my dad to dust of the projector. And my mom complains we never throw anything away :)

I have a shiny brand new machine under my desk. But I can’t use it b/c I’m still waiting for the video card. I guess I should be happy that I actually got my boss to sign off on it. Another dark cloud in a silver lining.
